Sports and Brain injuries
![]() | About SiteI am a high school student. I was given a project and this site is my visual product. My aim is to make you aware that sports can be a great danger to our brain, and how brain injuries can affect our sports careers, health and life. |
As I wrote this article, Michael Schumacher (the most successful driver in the history of Formula one) lay in a hospital bed, in a coma following a ski accident (when wearing a helmet). He fell and smashed his head against a rock. How timely for this topic I am addressing.
Today, brain injuries have become very common. Sports are one of the many things that can cause you to damage your brain or injure your brain. Of all the sports recorded for causing brain injuries - American Football (NFL, NCAAF), Ice Hockey (NHL), Race car driving (Formula One), Basketball (NBA, College Basketball) and cycling are the most dangerous sports for causing brain injuries (however, I will only be addressing this topic based on American Football and Ice Hockey). It is becoming a popular and important global issue. Many foundations, businesses and influential people have been trying to make everyone aware of the danger of Sport. Although we all love sports and it does improve our fitness, it does however, have some detrimental consequences.
"Concussions are the most common type of brain injury from sport. It has been estimated that there are approximately 1.6 million to 3.8 million concussions (from sport) per year." - http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/guide/head-injuries-causes-and-treatments
"Ice Hockey caused 44.3% of all sports-related injuries among Canadian children and teenagers." - http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/258450.php
"American Football accounted for 12.9% of all injuries, most of which were caused by tackling. Tackling was the main cause of all rugby injuries. Rugby caused 5.6% of all sports-related head injuries." - http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/258450.php
My aim in this article is to make you aware of what is going on through your brain when you have injured your head or neck from a sport. I am a very active person myself, but have gotten 5 concussions over the past year and fear of hurting myself severely.
